Sonoran Desert Kingsnake

Lampropeltis getula spendida

A solid, black background with extensive, golden yellow speckling on the sides, and yellow crossbars on the back. Note the nice, solid black, sock head pattern.

A medium sized (36-45 in) getula from the central western states. Despite its name, this snake is often a resident of dry grasslands as opposed to outright desert. I work with a line from western Texas locale, characterized by a solid black head, and abundant yellow highlights on the flanks. This line hatches out with white markings , which quickly turn yellow. The markings do not fade as the snake matures. This line comes from Tim Gebhard of Vivid Reptiles.
